Itβs Not What We See π But How We See π
Everyone is living life wearing a unique pair of spectacles π β whether or not we have any issue with our physical eyes.
We look at the world through different kinds of lenses.
These lenses could be:
The cultural environment weβve lived in for a long period of our life π
The experiences weβve been through πΏ
The influence of the people closest to us, especially the adults in our early life π§©
When we were young, we were like a white sheet of paper π
Fresh, open, and easily shaped by the hands that held the pen ποΈ
Our surroundings painted colours π¨ on this blank page, forming part of the lens we now wear.
Why does this matter? π€
Because we donβt see things as they are β
We see things as we are ποΈ
Our lens colours every situation we encounter π¨
It influences how we see others, how we perceive situations, and how we decide what matters to us π§
And most of the time, we arenβt even aware itβs happening.
So when we feel triggered, defensive, or quick to judge another person, it is wise to pause for a moment and consider:
What lens am I wearing right now? π
Is this lens constructive in this situation? π§©
Sometimes, itβs not about right or wrong βοΈ
(And sometimes, being right doesnβt help β being constructive is what matters π οΈ)
In practical terms πΏ
Behind the position we hold on any issue in life, there is often a deeper history π
Views shaped by our particular beliefs π
Ethics and values we carry π§
The echoes of our childhood experiences π§Έ
and many more.
All of these combine to form what feels like our βidealβ position in that particular matter.
When we become aware that we are looking at the world through a specific lens,
we realise:
We can re-choose the lens we wear, at any point of time ππ
While we may never be completely free from having lenses β because some degree of conditioning will always be part of being human π β we can become aware of them.
And from this awareness, we can choose our responses, rather than simply reacting π±
We are always free to adjust our lens π§
To soften it π
To widen it π
To reframe our view of the world, not because we were wrong before, but because we are growing π±
Your Turn πΏ
Is there anything youβd like to adjust in your βspecsβ π today?
Take a moment to notice it β and remember, youβre always free to choose ποΈ
